Thank God It's Thursday, 01.12.2011

I'm sorry that I didn't post anything last tuesday; I was very busy with school and other things.

Indian Releases

I Am Singh - Bollywood seems to have an affection for producing seemingly poor 9/11-films at the time. I also wonder how smart it is to name a film that is situated in New York and that revolves around survival etc. "I Am Singh". I think people will rather re-watch the Will Smith version of that.

Land Gold Women - This is a film with high ambitions, though judging from the trailer it doesn't look like a masterpiece. Nevertheless, it won the Nation Film Award, which is known to be the only truly trustworthy award in India, so that should be reason enough to see it.

The Dirty Picture - Starring Vidya Balan, produced by Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor... run to the theaters as fast as you can! (PS: Trailer and posters look good, too).
I have the feeling that many men are going to see this, for obvious reasons, but it seems it's going to bring Bollywood one step further to gender equality. That being said, Bollywood is very close to it, in my opinion - at least partly.

Mentionable German releases

In Time - A very rotten film according to RT. I do find the plot interesting though... it reminds me of one of my favorite child books, it's called "Momo".

Jane Eyre - Unbelievable that I haven't read the book yet, even though I'm such a sucker for books and films from or about the 19th century. Neither have I seen any of the films, but I've had an eye on this one for a long time (literally, I mean this took a long time to come here)... I really like Jamie Bell and Mia Wasikowska was all right in ALICE IN WONDERLAND, too.

Releases at the local repertory

(By the way, Melancholia played last week, and I was in to watch it. You can read my opinion in the next Happy Next Month post).

Certified Copy - Already entitled (one of) the best film(s) of the year, I'm eager to watch this film - but there's no time at all with school and everything else... sadly. Well, we'll see.

Whore's Glory - A documentary about prositution. Surely informative and shocking. Not what I need right now.

  1. Land Gold Women was made by a girl from my school. I tried for the whole of last year to get it shown in the Film Club which I was so desperate to start, but yeah, no avail. I will love to see it though.

I am dying to watch Dirty Picture. I think if it is made right, it will be very entertaining and very cool, and I just love Vidya BAlan and Naseeruddin Shah. It will broaden the horizons of Bollywood, definitely.

  2. Bollywood seems to have an affection for producing bad films in general! I like the poster for I Am Singh, but whether it's a good movie or not who knows.

I like the look of The Dirty Picture (and the look of Vidya Balan - different!). Could there be a more obvious title! It's quite a departure to see Vidya in a sexy role (no traditional sari in sight!)

Limette are you doing the next Lamb Photoshop? (I've got a good one...)

  3. I look forward to your Melancholia review!
In Time looked interesting, the rotten rating put me off

I liked Certified Copy, not as warm-hearted as I had hoped, but it certainly has good dialogue. You should check my review, once you've seen it ( :

  4. Nikhat - Really? That is so cool!
I'd love to be in a film club too, but there's none where I live either. I also like Naseeruddin Shah a lot, even though I think there was much more attraction between Vidya and Arshad in Ishqiya.

The Bolly Hood - Well she was sexy in Ishqiya. Though not as much as she's able to in this one.
Have you seen the trailer for I Am Singh? I like the poster too, but the trailer is awful.
... No, I don't have any time to participate. I wish you good luck!

Chris - I don't really know yet how much I liked the film, but it was a strong one indeed.
I feel just like you about In Time...
And I'll check your review out, but I don't think I'll see it in cinema... maybe.

  5. I Am Singh - So totally not interested. MNIK, New York and Kurbaan were more than enough for me...

Land Gold Women - I find National award overrated and actually the most rigged :P

The Dirty Picture - Definitely watching as soon as it comes out on DVD! I love vidya and the reviews are raving about the film as well.

  6. Gaja Gamini - I've stayed away from New York and Kurbaan, thankfully :).
Well, I've approved most of the national award winners yet.

As for the other releases of the week, I've seen Certified Copy and definitely recommend it if you can find the time.
