Happy New Month: Films of November 2012

Yes, I'm still here.
Hope you didn't miss me too much, but it's going to continue almost like this for a while. I'll try and write a little more, but I can't promise anything.
Good news is I'm getting back into my film-watching mood/ mode, which really satisfies me more than I would have thought. So even though I don't write much, I do watch more again.
I'm also in SUPER-CHRISTMAS-MOOD/ MODE!

Here's a song for the christmas mood - can't get it out of my head. Need to see Top Hat really soon.

And a video of the christmas choir I'm in, it's from last week. I think we're getting really good. (It's a danish/ scandinavian tradition that girls sing at christmas, with the white dresses and the lights).

WATCHED FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME

28 Days Later... (2002) Danny Boyle - UK
Really cool, though not very creepy. I liked the scene where he walks around London all alone. Also, Cillian Murphy is just too hot.
8.0

Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) Manmohan Desai - India
Noooot really what I had expected. Sorry, but this is not my kind of humour. I liked the beginning sequence though, with the hospital beds and the names.
6.5

Breaking Dawn, Part II (2012) Bill Condon - USA
A fitting end to the saga. Yes, I'm one of those who don't hate it - the books are a thousand times better, but what the hell.
6.4

Die Vermessung der Welt (2012) Detlev Buck - Germany
Beautiful visuals, but the purpose was kind of vague... The acting was great though.
6.5

En kort en lang (2001) Hella Joof - Denmark
Sweet Danish comedy on a gay couple of which one man falls in love with a woman. Gotta love it (not only because of Mads Mikkelsen...). Ahem.
6.8

Fish Tank (2009) Andrea Arnold - UK/ Netherlands
Absolutely awesome, you know I still find myself thinking about this movie.
8.5

Heroine (2012) Madhur Bhandarkar - India
Too long, too dramatic, too long. Kareena was great though. But that's no excuse.
6.4

Love Actually (2002) Richard Curtis - UK/ USA
The perfect christmas movie. Why did I never stumble upon it before? Anyway, this was my first review for The Artifice, and I'm proud of it.
7.4

Teri Meri Kahaani (2012) Kunal Kohli - India
And another lame Indian rom-com... Meh.
5.4

Shabd (2005) Leena Yadav - India
Great potential, not very well-used.
3.9

RE-WATCHED WITH THE PURPOSE OF INTENSE EXAMINATION

Dhoom (2004) Sanjay Gadhvi - India
So stupid and so much fun. Cult.
6.2

Dhoom: 2 (2006) Sanjay Gadhvi - India
Quite stupid too and even more fun. Cult 2.
7.0

Drive (2011) Nicolas Winding Refn - USA
A great movie to watch the morning after a party. Or when you have that teenage-y kind of lovesickness that's disappeared already next day.
9.4

Groupies bleiben nicht zum Frühstück (2010) Marc Rothemund - Germany
A cute movie on what it's like to fall in love with a rockstar.
7.1

Harry Potter 6-8 (2009, 10, 11) David Yates - UK/ USA
HAARRRYYYY POOOOOOTTTEEEEER!!!!!!!!
10.0

Amount of feature films watched this month: 17 (October +3)
Average rating: 7.2  (October -0.9)

Worst film of the month: Shabd
Best film of the month: Drive

SERIES

True Blood, Season 3 and 4
F***, I still like this. Am I weird? I mean, yeah it's not just as good as the first and second season, but still....
Verdict: Still addicted

BOOKS

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle - Murakami, Haruki
Wow, it really took me one whole month to read this. Anyway, it's one of the best books I've ever read. And it's going to be the first I blogged about.
***** out of 5

  1. Glad to read you liked the last Twilight film, though I must say I found the movies to be much more entertaining than the books.

I used to adore True Blood, but season 5 is horrible.

    1. You did? That's unusual!
Not sure whether I'll watch s. 5 of True Blood...

  2. AAA - loved it :D So much fun. On the other hand I found first Dhoom rather average and second Dhoom absolutely horrible. Did not enjoy it at all. Heroine is really a very average fair, Bhandarkar messed up. Kareena was the saving grace. ter Meri Kahaani is probably the most forgettable film of the year.

    1. I think Bhandarkar isn't what he used to be anymore... :(

    2. I have only seen Fashion by him and liked that. But I think he killed his own creativity after that and grew too sure of himself.

    3. I liked Fashion too, and Page 3 - but I didn't like Dil To Baccha Hai Jai for example.

  3. 28 Days Later, I agree the empty streets in London were the highlight.

Fish Tank (2009), that movie is quite disturbing, but it just stays with you. Unforgettable movie.

My favorite Murakami is Kafka on the Shore. Not so long ago, I went to a lecture about that author.
I haven't read Wind-Up Bird Chronicle yet(its on my shelf)-I remember I was told that people don't talk about World War Two in Japan, but that in late 80s Murakami moved to the US, and this enabled him to write The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (1994)

    1. I didn't find Fish Tank that disturbing, but very sad in a way... does that mean I'm growing up in a world that's getting more and more cold-blooded? No, honestly, of course it was a little shocking, but stuff like that is one reality tv all the time... just shown in a different way.

Kafka on the Shore has been recommended to me by a lot of people. So I'll certainly read it... and I hope you'll find the time to read the Wind-Up Bird Chronicle!

  4. I'm a big fan of Fish Tank, Love Actually, and Drive. Kafka on the Shore is the only Murakami novel I've read. A very strange and intriguing novel. I really liked it, except for one horrible scene involving cats. :-)

    1. He does have a very strange way of telling stories, but until now I've liked it. However, after reading three of his novels in a row, I think I need a little break. Currently I'm reading H. C. Andersen ;).

  5. I really need to see Fish Tank, if only to see Fassbender only.

So you read Twilight novels? Always better the book than the movie, for anything.

Shah Rukh Khan just came to my city (just saying), I just realized that he was very very popular here.

    1. Definitely, you should. It's one of the best films of the last century I dare say. And one of the best British movies I've seen.

I don't think the book is always necessarily better than the films, although I can't think of an example right now ;).
Oh great, did you see Shahrukh? He's quite popular everywhere.

  6. Thank you for sharing the video of your choir. I love listening to songs when I don't understand a single word - without the distraction of comprehension, I can enjoy just listening to the voice as an instrument. That was a very enjoyable performance, I hope you'll share more!

    1. You're welcome, and thank you!
I probably won't be a part of the choir next christmas because I'll be writing exams and stuff, but I love singing and hope I'll be able to continue doing it at university or so.
