Movie Confessions Blogathon

Yippie-yeah, it's blogathon time again!
The guru of movie blogathons, Nostra, continues his tradition of amazingly entertaining web events and get's ready to win the first place in the Lammies next year.
The movie confessions blogathon in his own words: This time it's about you confessing your "movie sins", time to speak about the things you might have kept secret for years.

There is a whole bunch of cool questions again, and I shall be answering them for your pleasure now.

Which classic movie don't you like/can't enjoy and why?

Easy question: Gone With the Wind all over. I loathe this movie. And it's not like I didn't try - I really wanted and expected to love it. But the story was boring and long drawn, I hated each and every one of the characters (especially Scarlett) and didn't understand much of the conflict. Call me stupid, but this is my honest opinion.

Which ten classic movies haven't you seen yet?
Haha... ha... TEN? What about ten thousand? But okay, I'll stick to the ones I really feel like I should see very soon (chronological order):

Nosferatu (1922)
L'Age D'Or (1930)
King Kong (1933)
Notorious (1946)
The Apu Trilogy (50s?)
A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)
The 400 Blows (1959)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Have you ever sneaked into another movie at the cinema?

I admit to wanting to, but I kind of never had the guts to do it. Surprising, considering the fact that 1) I'm a poor teenager and 2) I love going to the cinema. Yeah, it's my moral values and all that. I'm too good for the world.

Which actor/actress do you think is overrated?
Not as easy as it sounds... there are many bad actresses, but I don't feel many of them are overrated by intelligent people. But if I absolutely have to choose one, I must say I've never fully understood the buzz around Gwyneth Paltrow. She seems snobby. But she is an okay actress.

From which big director have you never seen any movie (and why)?
Godard. And I only saw one Truffaut film. You want a reason? Well, there is no reason. I just haven't seen one of his films yet.

Which movie do you love, but is generally hated?

Time to get out the big sticky Bollywood blockbusters, is it? And to make it especially awful, I'm going to choose one of the most hated and at the same time most loved films in the world: Karan Johar's family drama epic Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. It is boring, manipulating, hypocritical and sugary, but I love it. Guess I've told you this often enough, but this film brought Bollywood to Germany, and to my life, and that's why I will forever hold it dear.

Have you ever been "one of those annoying people" at the cinema?
Definitely. Especially when with friends you don't always realize that you're noisy - but actually most of the time I'm rather quiet, it's just when the cinema is almost empty...

Did you ever watch a movie, which you knew in advance would be bad, just because of a specific actor/actress was in it? Which one and why?
Many, many, many Shahrukh Khan films. Choose between Koyla, Karan Arjun, English Babu Desi Mem, Dushman Duniya Ka etcetera etcetera. I watched them because I wanted to watch every single Shahrukh Khan film - and I almost succeeded. Just right now I'm not really that much into him anymore, so I'm waiting for my passion to revive. Believe me, he is a great actor, he just doesn't always choose the greatest movies.

Did you ever not watch a specific movie because it had subtitles?

No, never ever. I have not watched movies because they didn't have an original audio track besides the German dubbed version, that's how snobby I am. But I'm glad I speak/ understand Hindi decently, as the subtitles can be really frustrating at times. Just check out this amazing tumblr site: Paagal Subtitle.

Are there any movies in your collection that you have had for more than five years and never watched?
Nope. But I have a lot of DVDs that I've only seen once... but I watch most of them at least 2-3 months after I bought them.

Which are the worst movies in your collection and why do you still own them?

I'm pretty sure I still own me a Ram Jaane DVD. Because it's too good to be bad.

Do you have any confessions about your movie watching setup at home?
Not really a confession... but until lately, I had a TV that was as small as my laptop screen and it was terrible. Having a flat screen is real luxury. I "confess" though that I sometimes watch movies on my laptop, but it's okay when you're near enough.

Any other confessions you want to make?
I kind of sometimes like High School Musical and Hannah Montana.
But I think my faithful readers know this already.

  1. This blogathon looks like fun, I'll do it! I'm out of ideas for today's post anyways, and I'm far too tired to come up with a decent review.

hahah "it's okay when your near enough", my sentiments exactly! I just got used to watch films on my laptop, I don't really mind.

I sometimes like High School Musical, too. But I've never seen Hannah Montana. Oh you should definitely watch Notorious. It's one my favorites, really high on my list.

    1. Yeah, I haven't read any of the other posts yet 'cause I've been away for two weeks, but I love these blogathons.
If you like High School Musical (at least a little), you should definitely watch the Hannah Montana movie. I know you love Notorious, I really need to see it!

  2. Great post! I agree about Paltrow - she is as snobby as they come! Have you seen her website? It's beyond ridiculous.

    1. No, I haven't seen it yet, but I've read tons of articles and interviews in those "women's magazines", where she snobs around about food and exercise and bla...

  3. God, Gone With the Wind just would not end. It just went On and On and even further On. And I don't think I have to tell you that I equally loathe K3G as well, right ?

Notorious is my Favorite Hitchcock. Absolutely recommended and so is Apu Trilogy.

Not to sound too condescending but RAM JAANE ??
This is turning out to be quite a fun to read blogathon. :)

    1. I knew you would loathe it - you're Indian, intelligent... why should you like it? It's stupid. Though not as stupid as liking Ram Jaane, haha.

  4. I'm really enjoying all the posts in this blogathon. I caught Gone with the Wind for the first time in January. I didn't hate it, but it really got rough during the second half. I admire the scale but agree that Scarlett can be annoying. I was with it during the war but lost interest during Reconstruction. That part got pretty painful. From your list, I'll echo the comment that Notorious is one of Hitchcock's best.

  5. I was shocked when I first watched Gone With the Wind because I actually really liked it. Believe me, that is not my kind of movie at all. I don’t know how that happened.

Oooh Streetcar, ya gotta do it!

    1. Well, that's the power of cinema. You never know what you're going to get... or like.
As I said, I expected to like it.

  6. Yay, I also put 400 Blows and King Kong on my classics-to-see list. Don't know what to be happy about, but yay.

  7. Thanks for joining. I should start a list of all the titles people are giving me (king, master and now guru) ;)
I surely hope I will win next year, if the amount of people who have joined this blogathon is any indication I guess I could do pretty well :)

I should start noting down which movies people don't enjoy as I feel a lot of bloggers have named Gone With the Wind! The movie is extremely long and although I don't loathe it I don't feel the need to ever watch it again :)

Out of those 10 classics there are a lot I have not seen either! (only saw King Kong, Notorious and The 400 Blows).

Another vote for Paltrow...interesting. Personally I quite like her.

Although I don't watch Bollywood movies I have seen Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham years ago. Can't remember much of it though.

That Paagal Subtitle tumblr is pretty funny! Have you ever seen the Benny Lava video on youtube? Totally different concept, but it's so funny!

    Great answers!

    1. Nothing to thank for :).
I'm really excited to read all the other posts, or some of them.

Ah, don't rewatch Kabhi Khushi, it's awful. Except that I love it.

And yeah, I know the video, it's pretty cool.

  8. Hmm...Gone with the Wind...I think I did like it, but like you said, the characters are so dislikable, and it's so long! I mean, it's epic and an amazing production, it's just....hard to sit through.

    Nosferatu is pretty cool!

    1. It is? Cool.

There are a lot of split opinions on Gone With the Wind, most people love or hate it... so it's interesting to hear that you do neither.

  9. Ah.... Gone with the Wind is IMO a great film. I loved it - even though I never ever liked Scarlet. Vivien was stunning in the film though....

Ram Jaane is one of those films that I could hardly stand SRK in.... I just hated every bit of it. At the same time Koyla is my guilty pleasure :D

    Great feature. Enjoyed reading!

    1. Thanks, Gaja.
You're either Koyla or Ram Jaane (though I've heard there are people who liked or hated both!).

I didn't know you liked Gone With the Wind, though it makes sense... Oh yes, Vivien was oh so stunning... I'd like to see her in another film.

    2. Well, I´m not rally into Western films, but some films are simply a must see. I remember I watched GWTW first time because somebody gave me a DVD print for free when I bought a new toaster :D

Yes, mostly people hate or love Ram Jaane, but I think the negative views overweight the positive ones.
