It's time to get sentimental and remember all those disappointed expectations... All those times I opened the DVD box/ internet browser/ my wallet to pay for the theatre ticket, expecting a night/ afternoon/ morning full of joy and blissful movie awesomeness. Oh well... makes me cry to remember.
Here are 18 of my hugest movie disappointments and my thoughts/ expressions when I watched them/ when I was done watching them (in no particular order):
1 - Sweet Home Alabama
„Seriously? This movie is... popular? That's so sad.“
2 - Sex and the City 2
„Hahahah, let's just pretend this isn't as embarrassing as it is... lalala...“
3 - Gone With the Wind
„Say what, now?“
4 - Eragon
„How dare you...“
5 - Inkheart
„Didn't you listen? I actually meant what I said about Eragon.“
6 - Nowhere Boy
„No, still not feeling it. Whatever, I can still have day dreams about Aaron Johnson...“
7 - Emma
„Oh Gwyneth... I'm so sorry (fake smile), but you have not been accepted in my list of likable actresses.“
8 - Love Aaj Kal
„Okay, let's just close our eyes and think really hard about something nice.“
9 - The Other Man
„I'm not even going to pretend this is any fun.“
10 - We Are Family
„Just keep that smile frozen on your face and everything is going to be all right.“
11 - Lincoln
„Me? No, I'm fine. I'm cool. This is... I'm gonna do this... after all there's only two hours left!“
12 - Birth of a Nation
I don't think you want to know what I looked like when I read this.
13 - Kal Ho Naa Ho
„Haha, I'm so happy. No, really. This *blubber* was just *snivel* my favourite movie as a chihihihihihild...“
14 - Bhooter Bhabishyat
„Maybe, if I don't move, this movie will get better.“
15 - Les 400 Coups
„So... this is it?“
16 - Independence Day
„Don't be such a pussy, it's only America trying to save the world... and trying to make the 4th of July the most celebrated day in the world... Come on, smoke a cigar and the world is going to look so different.“
17 - Raja Hindustani
„As long as there's music, at least we can dance.“
18 - Deewana
„Ah, there you are! Leading Man of this movie! Only one hour late!“

PS: I might stretch this over a longer period as I'm not sure whether I'll be able to blog every day in the next two weeks.
Oh no Mette, we've just had our first disagreement: I love the hell out of Sweet Home Alabama! How can you resist Josh Lucas all southern accent, flannel shirts (before they were hipster) and covered in oil? Come on.
ReplyDeleteAgreed: though I wasn't as disappointed, Aaron Johnson was by far the best thing in Nowhere Boy; Eragon is a complete mess.
It was indeed hard to resist Josh Lucas, but the predictability and absolute unoriginality of this movie made it easier (sorry, I'm just teasing you).
DeleteAs for Eragon, I don't think there's anybody out there who liked the movie - the one good thing about it was Jeremy Irons.
oh my God Josh Lucas in that movie <3 *drools*
DeleteTHANK YOU Sati. haha I know, I just think it's a really sweet movie with some pretty funny moments. But it's a guilty pleasure, not a masterpiece!
DeleteI think Sweet Home Alabama is sweet, but that's it. Same for Emma and Independence Day is harmless fun.
ReplyDeleteOh man hi5! on Gone With the Wind, The Birth of a Nation and Lincoln.
I like the first half of KHNH.
The only one I completely disagree with is The 400 Blows. Rewatched it again recently and loved it so much.
I think that it could be argued that Sweet Home Alabama and Emma are harmless fun, but Independence Day just had me biting my nails and crying my eyes out of anger (ahm, not literally). I just HATE that movie!
DeleteI do like KHNH too, but I think it's just because it reminds me of my childhood... the rewatch was more of a disappointment.
Don't know what I don't like about The 400 Blows. Well, actually I don't even dislike it. I just don't care about it at all.
Its funny. Lot of movies in this list are ones that I don't particularly care about but do not have any real problem with it - Like Deewana or Raja Hindustani. I mean, I have no desire of watching either but I do not hate them. And Deewana is not about Shahrukh Khan. Its his second movie, no one cared about him then(I don't know why they do now but that's another discussion). Absolutely despise Kal Ho Na Ho. Hate It !!
ReplyDeleteI kinda like Sweet Home Alabama though. I have seen it too many times, not to.
Wow, there seems to be no person on earth who dislikes Sweet Home Alabama - no one at all!
DeleteHaha, I wonder when we'll ever agree... because I do like KHNH as I wrote to Nikhat. About Deewana: I know it's not about SRK, but he was the only ok thing about the movie ;). But don't you DARE say anything against him, haha.
As for Raja Hindustani, it's all right but I expected more from a Filmfare Best Movie Award winner... kinda.
haha I was just talking with a friend about how much we like Sweet Home Alabama and it's one of the few romantic comedies that aren't too bad. So funny to see it now on this list!
ReplyDeleteI've seen a few times on here that Gone with the Wind is not liked. Can I ask why? :D
Oh God, what have I got myself into?
DeleteIt's just that my sister promised me a real sweet and lovely rom-com and everything about it made me roll my eyes and say "Really? I just said that was going to happen".
But perhaps I should re-watch it after all of this defense from you bloggers.
As for Gone With the Wind, I just don't find the characters relatable at all, found it way too long and didn't see the point of the movie.
Add my voice to the chorus of defenders for Sweet Home Alabama. It makes no pretension to cinematic greatness or innovation, but does what it promises with competence and sweetness. Now that you're getting into Doctor Who, a film in a similar vein you might enjoy (if you haven't checked it out already) is The Decoy Bride.
ReplyDeleteGetting into Doctor Who? I think I'm already deeply involved ;).
DeleteNo, thanks for your recommendation.
What is surprising is Love Aaj Kal making it to the list in the first place. xD
ReplyDeleteYou mean because of "surprisingly"? Well, it was loved by most German Bollywood fans, so I did expect something more original and less cliché - although I did like the "old" story.
DeleteYep, I'm totally with you on Gone With the Wind. For all that's spoken about it, it turned out to be such a ho-hum movie.
ReplyDeleteHah, that's a funny expression! Describes it very well though.
DeleteAw, I like Sweet Home Alabama! Gone With the Wind, I cannot agree more on. For a movie with so much acclaim..it's so. freaking. boring.
ReplyDeleteIf you dislike Gone With the Wind you should see Birth of a Nation - it's at least three times as boring as the previous!
