Ever had a place you dreamed of all the time although you had never been there? That's what New York is to me. I don't know whether I'll like New York, whether it will like me and whether it would be just as Woody Allen, Friends and HIMYM make me imagine it. Until I get there and find out, at least I can watch movies.
Here's what pleased me most of the grand selection until now...

What are some of your favourite NYC movies?
Or do you have a different dream city?
I'm loving these series you have going. Sorry I haven't been able to comment on all of them. If I had the time, I totally would have left love filled comments all over these posts! The ideas for 'em keep getting cooler and cooler, and no worries about not changing the age on the old blogger - you'll be able to enter the dark side of my force soon!
ReplyDeleteHaha, don't worry Cherokee - I haven't been around on other blogs much recently either.
DeleteAnd thanks for the kind words! I can't wait to finally enter the dark side.
LOVE '10 Days.' It's such a cute, "fluffy" rom-com. :)
ReplyDeleteReally? That's cool. I like it too but it's generally not a very "liked" movie.
Delete18 movies about New York and none from Edward Burns? Interesting - pretty much all his movies celebrate his hometown, although most are more intimate and personal than some of the ones that made the cut here.
ReplyDeleteI think I know what you meant by "I had no idea Alan Rickman was in Harry Potter" - I had no idea who Edward Burns is until I googled it a second ago. The only films I've seen of his are Saving Private Ryan and 27 Dresses in which he appears as an actor, so that's the explanation ;).
DeleteBut thanks for the recommendation, I'll try to remember his name and perhaps watch some of his movies.
If you're interested, Alex Withrow wrote a great post about Edward Burns' career, I agree with Alex that Newlyweds (2011) is Burns' best movie:

Thanks for the link, Chris - I agree with the writer's view of most of the films I've seen and now have several more to hunt down. Much obliged!
DeleteI agree! You have to have Edward Burns in there! He's one of those solid New York writer/filmmakers (not just an actor!). Yes, I would agree that "Newlyweds" is his best.. "The Brothers McMullen" was his first film and what he is most known for.. "Purple Violets" and "Nice Guy Johnny" are also great..
DeleteYou also HAVE to have Spike Lee! New York and Spike Lee are kinda synonymous...
Love this series, Mette!
Hey Shala, thanks for commenting!
DeleteOh, there are so many directors out there whose work I haven't seen yet... it's a shame. I'll make sure to include Burns in my next big movie-watching session.
As for Spike Lee, I've only seen Inside Man, which I liked but didn't love.
Nah, that wasn't a good representation of Spike Lee as a director. That was like his one venture into mainstream. You have to watch classic Spike Lee - "Do The Right Thing", "Crooklyn", "Malcolm X" - or at the very least "25th Hour"
DeleteI heard that from other people too. Malcolm X was highly recommended to me by a blogger who sadly left the scene 'bout a year ago... I can't promise anything, but I'll try to check out classic Lee soon.
DeleteGreat list Mette. There are sooo many great movies set in NYC, one that came to mind immediately is Serendipity, I like the NY scenes in that one. Oh, of course my personal fave is Superman, where NYC was made to be 'Metropolis' :D
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ruth! I liked the Superman movies I've seen, I think they're the first two :)
DeleteGreat varied choices here! You already have some Woody Allen I see. Manhattan (1979) features the bridge scene, which is an iconic NY movie moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHkLSi7oEuw
ReplyDeleteThanks, Chris! I know, I know, I should've seen Manhattan ages ago, and of course I know the scene - it's great!
DeleteI've been to New York City twice and it's one of those places that's become weirdly split for me - film NYC remains in my head while the real NYC is completely separate from it. I'm not sure why that is.. maybe it's because even though they've been long holidays, I've never actually lived in NYC so never had a chance to truly soak up the vibe of the city. The experiences I have from it are just so real and tangible, and the film memories are just .. very different.
ReplyDeleteI will say that English Vinglish was another great NYC film, and as I saw that after my most recent visit, I connected it quite strongly to the city itself.
English Vinglish - thanks for reminding me of that one, I desperately need to watch it!
DeleteI understand what you mean by "split" - it's been the same for me with Paris. I like the city but it's just so big and almost scary in a way, when you're caught in the middle of it. Whereas when you see it from the outside, on movies etc., it's wonderful.
But then again, I've only been there for two separate days, perhaps it would be different if I took some time to acclimatize and stay for a week or longer.
Thanks for your comment :)
It's been several years since I've been back (2008), but I still consider NYC to be like my second home. You could make a list with 180 movies and none of them would be wrong.
ReplyDeleteThat is, if you had seen 180 New York based movies ;).
DeleteGreat post! I love that photo from Annie Hall ... I'd almost forgotten Woody Allen and Diane Keaton ever looked that young. ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks! Love it too, the scene deserves to be one of the most famous Woody Allen scenes ever.
