A Heavenly Creature

This post is part of the LAMB Acting School 101 - Kate Winslet.

One actress that has been a role model and inspiration to me, both on-screen and off-screen, is Kate Winslet.
The film that introduced her to me was ex-most-successful-film-ever TITANIC, during the year that started my great passion for cinema for real: 2009 (I'm a late bloomer concerning this). I thought she was one of the most beautiful women on earth, and was impressed by her acting skills as well. Plus I've never since seen a (on-screen-)chemistry like the one she has with Leonardo in this film.

Kate is one of those few actresses that have the body of a goddess, and oddly enough, makes you feel very confident about your own one. She has appeared in various period films, and I remember her saying in an interview, that she can only explain the reason why she was chosen for these films must be that her body is perfectly apt for wearing a corset.

Now that I think about it, I've only seen her in one non-historical film, namely THE HOLIDAY, and this explains why I had that strange sensation while watching it... Kate in modern clothes, in a modern environment? That I wasn't used to.

Aside from the above mentioned ones, I've seen the following of Kate's films (in chronological order): SENSE & SENSIBILITY (I'm a fan of Jane Austen), REVOLUTIONARY ROAD (Kate and Leo re-united), FINDING NEVERLAND (it was on TV) and THE READER (acclaimed/ the book was incredibly good). That means I've seen 6 of the 20-something feature films Kate has appeared in, and none because of her - at least not really. But I have heard about many other wonderful films with her, and this inspired me to put together the following list to contribute to the LAMB Acting School 101- Kate Winslet:

Kate Winslet films I have to watch before I turn 17 (next March):
(In chronological, most-anticipated/"curiosifying" order)

5. Romance & Cigarettes (2005) John Turturro

4. Little Children (2006) Todd Field

3. Hamlet (1996) Kenneth Branagh

2. Heavenly Creatures (1994) Peter Jackson

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) Michel Gondry

Wish me luck and...

  1. As I told you she's one of my favourite actresses, I've seen most of her films. Actually Winslet recently won an Emmy for her part in mini-series mildred pierce (I haven't seen it), so now she can put that next to her oscar on the mantelpiece ( :
Titanic could possibly regain the most successful spot, as they plan on releasing it next april in 3D to mark the 100th aniversary of the sinking

  2. I quite would like to see Little Children. I taped it when it was on TV a long time ago but I never got to watch it. I'm not sure whether we still have it at Blockbuster or not.

Heavenly Creatures and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are awesome!

  3. Chris - I've heard about that, and maybe I'll watch the series, it's just that it takes you so long to watch even a mini-series, so that you can't watch as many films as you could've.
And about the Titanic re-release... well, I'm usually not a big fan of the 3D-technology, but it worked in Avatar, and I'll watch the film at its very release just to be able to experience it on the silver screen (!) once...

Stevee - I know, they're both on your Top 100 list, if I remember right. Now I have some months to find the films somewhere (we have a connection of all Danish libraries in Denmark, so you can order about every film you want from say, a library in Copenhagen, which I just discovered).

  4. I have to admit I am not the biggest Kate Winslet fan but Eternal Sunshine is one of my all time favorites. Definitely one of those movie that I was still thinking about for days after I saw it. I have a copy of Little Children sitting on my laptop right now in .m4v (iPad/iPhone) that I haven't had a chance to watch yet. I will have to check it out.

  5. Griff - That's the reason why it's my #1, everyone seems to agree that it's wonderful.
I hope you write a post on Little Children, then!
